Vladas Karatajus was born in Vilkaviskis City, Lithuania, on 28 July 1925. He enrolled in the Institute of Fine Arts in 1946 and a few years later joined the study of figurative composition and portrait lead by Professor Vytautas Mackevičius. He graduated from the Institute in 1952 and was invited to give lectures. Vladas Karatajus was conferred the qualifications of Associate Professor in 1965, then later he became Professor. From 1968 the artist has been directing the Department of Painting.
Vladas Karatajus has held over 20 personal and collective exhibitions in Lithuania and three joint exhibitions abroad.
