Algis Skackauskas appeared in Lithuanian art in the middle of the 20th century. His paintings are very pictorial. All his works are based on original colours, delicacy and sensitive touch, which makes every painting expressive and distinctive. Algis Skackauskas is deeply interested in life of ordinary people, their souls and inner world. That interest is well reflected in his pictures.
The creative work of A. Skackauskas has some stylistic stages: his earliest works (the Eighties) are based on long, plastic and soft dab, tender shades, pastel colouring.
Between the Eighties and the Nineties, A. Skackauskas starts painting striking pictures. He uses vivid bright colours and dark (usually black) background. At the beginning of the last decade of the 20th c., A. Skackauskas’ creative work includes more nuances – besides vigorous touch, you can find vibrating painting; next to pastel – strained, energetic combinations of colours.
Creating emotional, expressional and spontaneous works, A. Skackauskas continues Lithuanian Art tradition. Peasants’ life, compositions with domestic animals – goats, sheep, geese, etc. constitute the most favourite subjects of A. Skackauskas’ painting.
The painter is distinguished not only for his talent in creating outstanding art, but also for his ability to analyse the content of painting. A. Skackauskas always seeks to find semantic meaning. That is why his works reflect allusion to literary, historical aspects.
Besides painting, A. Skackauskas writes poetry, which greatly affects the spirit of his pictures. A. Skackauskas chooses strange, funny characters, mythological themes, erotic motifs, banquets, wine-drinking scenes. He puts an ordinary meaning head over heels, so that the audience could interpret his works in different ways. Being close to Neo-expressionism, A. Skackauskas creates expressive art, which enchants everyone with its catching mood and burning spirit.
